About Katie O Editorial Services...

What types of documents do you edit?

I work with a wide range of academic, professional, and organisational documents, including journal articles, dissertations, theses, research reports, policy papers, business documents, and corporate communications. If your project does not fit neatly into a category, I will still be happy to review it.

Which editing service do I need?

If you are unsure whether your document requires proofreading, copyediting, or structural editing, I can recommend the most suitable option after reviewing your text. Many clients are unsure at the outset, this is completely normal.

How do I request a quote?

Just get in touch and send:

  • Your document (or a sample)

  • Your deadline

  • Any style guidelines or instructions

I will review the material and provide a bespoke, no-obligation quote.

What software do you use?

I normally edit in Microsoft Word using tracked changes and comments. PDF proofreading is also available on request.

How long will it take to edit my document?

Timelines vary depending on:

  • Word count

  • Level of editing required

  • Complexity of the material

  • Your deadline

I will confirm a clear delivery schedule before the project begins.

Do you work with students?

Yes. I edit Master’s and doctoral-level writing, including theses, dissertations, and research papers. All work follows academic integrity principles and institutional guidelines.

Is my work kept confidential?

Absolutely. I handle all documents securely and maintain strict confidentiality. Files are stored safely and deleted when no longer needed. I comply with UK data protection standards.

What are your rates?

Prices vary depending on the nature of the project, but all quotes are tailored and informed by CIEP professional guidance. You will receive a clear, transparent fee before any work begins.

Can you help with referencing?

Yes. I can check references for consistency, formatting, and alignment with style guides such as APA, Chicago, Harvard, or MLA. I do not generate sources or alter the content of your citations.

Can you work to tight deadlines?

Where possible, yes. If you are working to a strict timeline, please let me know as early as possible. I will always give an honest assessment of what can be achieved.

Will my writing still sound like me?

Yes. My editing respects your authorial voice and preserves the meaning and intent of your work. My role is to clarify, not to rewrite or change the substance of your ideas.

Can I rely on AI tools such as ChatGPT, Claude, or Grammarly instead of an editor?

AI-based tools can be useful for limited purposes, such as brainstorming or identifying surface-level language issues. However, they operate without contextual understanding, disciplinary awareness, or accountability, and they cannot reliably interpret institutional, professional, or ethical guidelines.

In academic, research, and professional contexts, reliance on AI tools may introduce risks relating to accuracy, authorship, and compliance with relevant standards.

How is human editorial support different from AI-based tools?

Human editorial support involves professional judgement, contextual sensitivity, and responsibility. As an editor, I work with your existing text to improve clarity, coherence, and accuracy while respecting the purpose, audience, and ethical framework within which the work sits.

And what about AI...

Can you edit or review work that has been written or substantially revised using AI tools?

My services are intended to support author-generated work. I do not rewrite, validate, or obscure AI-generated text, and I cannot guarantee ethical or institutional compliance for work that relies heavily on automated content generation.

If there is uncertainty about whether a text complies with relevant guidelines, this should be clarified before commissioning editorial support.

Who retains responsibility for the final text?

The author or commissioning client retains full responsibility for the final version of the work. Editorial support is a supplementary service designed to enhance clarity and precision, not to replace authorship, expertise, or professional judgement.
